Homemade Soap Nut Liquid Detergent

Soap nuts are a completely natural, hypoallergenic, and sustainable cleaning product. The shells contain saponin, a natural cleaning agent. Soap nuts are gentle on both laundry and skin, making them especially recommended for those with sensitive skin, and they are ideal for baby clothes.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 12-15 soap nut halves (or 8 whole soap nuts)
  • 4 cups of water

Directions

  1. Add Soap Nuts and Water: Place the soap nuts and water in a pot.
  2. Bring to a Boil: Heat the pot on high until the water begins to boil.
  3. Simmer: Once boiling, lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, or until about 1/4 of the water evaporates.
  4. Cool and Store: After simmering, let the liquid cool completely. Transfer it to a glass container. You can strain out the soap nuts or leave them in.

What to Expect:

  • The soap nuts will soften, turn brown, and release their saponin.
  • The liquid will also turn brown, and foam will appear on the surface—a clear sign the saponin is being released.
  • Avoid covering the pot with a lid, as the foam might cause the liquid to overflow.

What to Do with the Used Soap Nuts:

The leftover soap nuts can be repurposed as natural fertilizer for houseplants or garden soil. Alternatively, you can discard them in the trash, as they’re biodegradable.

How to Use Soap Nut Liquid:

This liquid can be used on its own or mixed with other ingredients for personal care, house cleaning, or as a natural laundry detergent.

Storing Soap Nut Liquid:

  • Shelf Life: Soap nut liquid lasts up to 7 days when stored in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.
  • Freezing Option: For longer storage, pour the liquid into ice cube trays and freeze.

With just a little effort, you’ve got a versatile, eco-friendly cleaner that’s perfect for your home and personal care needs!
